''Night AND FOG IN Nihon,'' which opens today at the Motion picture Forum, is the 3rd of three films that Nagisa Oshima, the Japanese director, then 32, made in 1960 - the others being ''Cruel Story of Youth,'' which had its premiere hither last yr, and ''The Sun'due south Burial,'' which has simply ended its Moving picture Forum run.
Of the three, ''Night and Fog in Japan'' is by far the most original and most difficult, at to the lowest degree to someone whose knowledge of Japanese domestic politics comes mostly from films. Nevertheless, by this time, anyone who has seen Mr. Oshima'southward works has received a fairly comprehensive course on what was going on in the 1950'south and specially in 1960.
''Night and Fog in Japan'' takes its championship from Alain Resnais's classic 1955 short, ''Night and Fog'' (''Nuit et Brouillard''), a deceptively serene yet hair-raising meditation on the Nazi concentration camps of World War Ii. The Oshima moving-picture show is besides a meditation, simply one in the form of a melodramatic confrontation amid university students - some Communists and all left-wingers - who had been agile in the demonstrations against the signing of the 1960 security treaty between the United States and Nihon.
The flick has the manner and much of the style of a phase slice. The frame is the sedate, very heart- grade wedding reception for 2 onetime university students, Reiko, the helpmate, and Haruaki, the groom, both of whom had participated in the demonstrations that meant for young Japanese liberals what 1968 meant for students in Europe and America. Ota, one of their former classmates, breaks into these genteel ceremonies to precipitate the activeness, a series of flashbacks in which the i-fourth dimension classmates recall the various treacheries past which their crusade was defeated.
The film'due south villain is the Japanese Communist Political party, whose leaders, according to Mr. Oshima, brazenly used the students when it was user-friendly and and then didn't hesitate to dump them when, in decisions over which the students had no command, the party policies were changed. Though the filmmaker remains committed to socialist causes, including the fight against Japan'due south re-militarization, ''Nighttime and Fog in Japan'' is more interesting for its form than for its content and characters, which are sometimes inscrutable.
Mr. Oshima uses his movie sets as if they were the stage of a theater, sometimes isolating a character by a spotlight while the other characters remain frozen in the penumbra. Sometimes he shoots a single scene in one extended take, swinging the camera back and forth among the speakers in graceful, nearly somnolent movements that, surprisingly, reinforce rather than contradict the fury of the melodramatic revelations.
All of this is much more cinematic than it sounds, though such devices are of express use, inevitably calling attention to themselves at the expense of the screenplay.
''Nighttime and Fog in Japan'' is another revealing chapter in the Pic Forum'southward current mini-retrospective devoted to Mr. Oshima.
